OpenAI publishes new privacy policy in Korea | Keryc
OpenAI updated its privacy policy for users in Korea on February 6, 2026. What does that mean for you if you use ChatGPT or other OpenAI services from Korea? I'll explain the essentials clearly, without techy jargon, so you can make informed choices about your data.
What data OpenAI collects and how
OpenAI collects several types of information when you use its services. It's not magic: it's information you provide and technical data your device produces.
Data you provide: name, email, credentials, birth date, payment information, your content (prompts, files, images, audio) and messages when you write to support.
Technical data from service use: IP addresses, browser type, device, time zone, access times, and usage data like which features you use and what content you view.
Location: can be inferred from IP and, if you allow it, from GPS.
to keep sessions, preferences, and improve experience. For more details see their Cookie Notice.

They also receive data from third parties: security partners, marketing providers, and public sources for model training.
What they use your data for
OpenAI lists practical uses you should know about:
Provide and maintain the services — for example, so ChatGPT answers your questions.
Improve products and do research for new features.
Communicate with you about changes or events.
Prevent fraud and protect system security.
Comply with legal obligations.
Important: they may also de-identify (anonymize) data and use it for analysis and research.
Do they use your content to train models?
Yes, OpenAI can use the content you give them to train and improve their models. Don’t want your content used for that? There are instructions and options to opt out. Check OpenAI’s guides on how to opt-out if that interests you.
Who they share your data with
OpenAI may share information in common operational and security situations:
Providers and partners that deliver services (hosting, analytics, payments).
In business transactions (sale or merger), when necessary.
Authorities and third parties if required by law or to protect rights and safety.
OpenAI affiliates.
Enterprise account administrators, if you’re part of a business account.
Third parties you share data with (for example, connected apps or shared links).
Retention and when your information is deleted
OpenAI retains data only as long as necessary for the purposes described: to operate the service, resolve disputes, or comply with the law. The duration depends on the data type and purpose.
For example, ChatGPT’s temporary chats may be kept up to 30 days for security purposes if you choose that option.
There are also account controls to delete or export your data.
Your rights as a user in Korea
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights such as:
Accessing, correcting, deleting, or porting your data.
Restricting or objecting to processing.
Withdrawing consent when it’s the legal basis.
Filing a complaint with the data protection authority.
You can exercise some rights from your OpenAI account. If you need help, OpenAI directs requests to privacy.openai.com or dsar@openai.com. For privacy matters you can also write to privacy@openai.com.
Security and international transfers
OpenAI applies commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, but remember: no transmission over the internet is 100% secure. Some processing and storage may occur on servers in the United States or other jurisdictions, and OpenAI says it applies the protections in this policy regardless of where the information is processed.
Children and minors
The services are not intended for children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 provided data, OpenAI asks that you notify privacy@openai.com so they can investigate and, if appropriate, delete the information.
Note on the accuracy of generated content
OpenAI reminds you that models like ChatGPT generate text by predicting likely words, and they can sometimes be wrong. If a model generates inaccurate information about you and you want to correct or remove it, you can submit a request to privacy.openai.com or dsar@openai.com for review under applicable law.
Policy updates
The policy may be updated over time. OpenAI will publish the policy version date on the page when they make changes.
Think of this as a basic map of how OpenAI handles your data in Korea: not everything is perfect or final, but knowing what types of data are collected, why, and how to exercise your rights puts you in control. Want help drafting a message to request data deletion or opt out of training? I can draft it with you.
