Google is changing NotebookLM’s name to Gemini Notebook, but the transformation goes far beyond a new label. The research tool keeps its independent identity and now connects with more services across Google’s ecosystem, including the Gemini app and, soon, Google Search.

From NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook
Google introduced NotebookLM in 2023 under the name Project Tailwind, with a simple goal: help people learn from their own documents and sources.
Since then, more than 30 million people and over 600,000 organizations have used the platform. Its applications include creating interactive employee training materials, turning notes into audio summaries, and transforming complex information into content that is easier to review.
With the name change, Gemini Notebook will continue to operate as an independent product focused on research. The difference is that it will now have a broader presence across Google’s products.
Data analysis with built-in code
One of the main new features happens behind the scenes. Google has begun rolling out an update that assigns each notebook a secure cloud computer.
In simple terms, this allows Gemini Notebook to write and run code natively. This means it can perform more complex data analyses based on the sources you have added to the notebook.
Imagine bringing several spreadsheets, sales reports, and research documents together in one place. Instead of simply summarizing them, the tool could help you find patterns, compare results, and generate deeper analyses from that information.
The key is that the analysis remains grounded in the notebook’s sources, rather than relying only on a general AI response.
The feature is initially available to Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Google also plans to bring it to all Pro users on the web over the next few weeks.
Your notebooks are coming to more places
The company also wants you to be able to access your research from different points. You can already create and view notebooks directly in the Gemini app, with synchronization between that app and the standalone Gemini Notebook experience.
This can be useful if you start researching on your phone, continue on the web, and then need to review a conclusion inside Gemini. Your information stays connected, without forcing you to work in separate compartments.
The next step will be integrating notebooks directly into Google Search’s AI Mode. The idea is for searching, gathering sources, and analyzing information to become part of the same workflow.
What does this mean for people who already use NotebookLM?
For current users, the main change will be the name and the integrations. The tool will remain focused on working with your documents and sources, but it will begin offering more analysis capabilities and more ways to access it.
It also reveals a clear direction for Google: turning Gemini into a shared layer for studying, researching, and working across different products. It is no longer only about chatting with a chatbot, but about building workspaces connected to specific information.
NotebookLM’s evolution into Gemini Notebook reflects how AI is moving from answering isolated questions to participating in complete processes. The promise is appealing, but it will still be important to review the results, check the sources, and understand what analysis the tool performed before making decisions.
