Google says it's now easier to check if an image was created or edited with AI directly from the Gemini app. Sound useful when you can't tell whether something on social media or in the news is real or machine-made? This feature uses SynthID, the digital watermark technology Google embeds in content generated by its models.
What Gemini's verification brings
Starting today, in the Gemini app you can upload an image and ask things like "Was this created with Google AI?" or "Is this generated by AI?" Gemini looks for the SynthID mark in the image and gives you extra context about its origin. It's an answer made for people, not for jargon: a quick, straightforward verification inside the same app.
SynthID launched in 2023 and, according to Google, more than 20 billion pieces of content have already been marked with this technique. Google has also been testing a verification portal called SynthID Detector with journalists and media professionals, which suggests this isn't just an experimental toy but a tool designed for real use in the information ecosystem.
