How can you tell whether an image, video, or audio clip was created by a person, generated with artificial intelligence, or edited after it was recorded? Google is expanding its tools to answer that question across Search, Gemini, Chrome, Pixel, and Google Cloud.
SynthID already marks AI-generated content
Three years ago, the company introduced SynthID, a technology that inserts imperceptible digital signals into content created with AI. These markers do not change the appearance or sound of the files, but they can help verify their origin.
According to Google, SynthID has already been used to mark more than 100 billion images and videos, along with around 60,000 years of audio. The technology is integrated into several of the company’s content-generation models and products.
Google also uses C2PA Content Credentials, a standard that records how a file was created and modified, even when artificial intelligence was not involved. The goal is to provide a verifiable history of the content, not just a label saying whether it was generated by AI.
The role of Pixel phones
The Pixel 10 was Google’s first phone to include Content Credentials directly in its native camera app. In the coming weeks, this feature will also reach videos recorded with the Pixel 8, 9, and 10.
This makes it possible to document that an image or video was captured by a camera and not altered from the moment it was taken. In an environment where synthetic images are becoming increasingly realistic, proving that a file is authentic can be just as important as identifying an edit made with AI.
Transparency is not only about detecting artificial content. It also means recognizing when a file comes from a camera and has preserved its origin.
Verification comes to Search and Chrome
Google has already added SynthID verification for images, videos, and audio in the Gemini app. The company says this feature has been used 50 million times worldwide.
Now, verification of AI-generated content is beginning to expand to Google Search and will arrive in Chrome over the coming weeks. Users will be able to analyze an image through tools such as Lens, AI Mode, or Circle to Search, as well as through Gemini in Chrome.
All you will need to do is ask questions such as “Was this created with AI?” or “Was this image generated by artificial intelligence?” The answer will depend on the signals available in the file and should not be treated as absolute proof when the content has no verifiable markers.
Google is also adding C2PA Content Credentials checks to Gemini. This option will show whether a file has kept its original state from the camera, whether it was modified, and which tools were involved in those changes. The feature will reach Search and Chrome in the coming months.
More companies adopt origin markers
Digital content often passes through several platforms before reaching a person. That is why a standalone tool has limited reach. Google wants its systems to work with shared standards and be recognized across different services.
OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs will begin incorporating SynthID into more content generated by their own systems. Google is also working with NVIDIA to mark videos created with the Cosmos models and has released part of its text watermarking technology.
The company also participates in the C2PA steering committee, an initiative that promotes standards for recording the provenance of digital files. Meta, which is also part of the committee, will begin labeling content on Instagram that was captured directly with cameras and includes Content Credentials.
That means photos and videos taken natively with Pixel phones could be recognized and labeled as camera-captured content when shared on Instagram.
Google Cloud offers detection for businesses
Google also announced a new AI Content Detection API within the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on Google Cloud. The tool will allow organizations to identify content generated by Google models and other popular systems.
Possible uses include the automatic classification of posts, content moderation, the detection of potential insurance fraud, and the identification of synthetic material for verification processes.
The API is launching initially with a group of trusted partners. Google says it will continue adjusting the tool based on their feedback, which is important in an area where generation methods are changing quickly.
Seeing the origin will become increasingly important
Watermarks and content credentials can make verification easier, but they do not eliminate every risk. A file can lose its metadata when it is downloaded, compressed, or converted, and not all content on the internet will include origin signals.
Even so, these tools address a specific need: having more context before sharing an image, believing a video, or making a decision based on digital information. AI is not only changing how content is created; it is also forcing us to improve how we check its history.
Google is betting on a combination of invisible markers, provenance records, search engines, browsers, and business services. For users, the expected result is simple: more clues to understand what they are seeing and less reliance on intuition.
