Designing clothes may seem, from the outside, like an activity dominated by sketches, fabrics, and runways. But for many independent designers, much of their time goes toward administrative tasks, coordinating with suppliers, and managing production logistics. How much room is left to create?
Before New York Fashion Week, Google worked with designers Jane Wade and Sergio Hudson to test a specific idea: using artificial intelligence as a collaborative tool, not as a replacement for creative judgment.
Two AI Tools for Solving Real Problems
With support from Google Labs, Google’s Envisioning Studio used Google Flow, described by the company as an AI-powered creative studio, to develop tools tailored to each designer’s specific needs.
The goal was not to create garments automatically. It was to reduce friction in stages that often consume time and budget, such as coordinating complete looks, planning a runway show, or visualizing changes before producing them physically.
AI works best in fashion when it helps people make faster decisions without taking control away from the person designing.
Styling Suite: Test the Look Before Sewing It
Jane Wade used a tool called Styling Suite to organize every element of her runway looks virtually. The system allowed her to combine garments, hairstyles, makeup, accessories, and shoes on digital models.
The traditional casting and in-person fitting process can take a design team up to three full days. With this tool, Wade was able to review the visual balance of each outfit before cutting fabric or producing additional samples.
The advantage may seem simple, but it can have a significant impact: catching early that a look needs another accessory, a different pair of shoes, or an additional piece can help avoid expenses and rework.
Runway Visualization: Design a Runway Show on a Limited Budget
For Sergio Hudson, the main challenge was putting on his show without exceeding the available budget. Changing the lighting, stage elements, or layout of the space often required new 3D renderings and more coordination with the production team.
The Runway Visualization tool allowed him to simulate different runway setups. Hudson could modify the venue’s configuration, test lighting and set-design accessories, and choose alternatives that better matched his resources.
He could also adjust the models’ routes so that the walk, the stage, and the audience experience worked together as a whole. Instead of waiting until the physical setup was ready to discover problems, he could explore them earlier in a virtual environment.
From Experiments to Useful Tools
The collaboration highlights an important difference from many AI initiatives in fashion. It is not just about generating striking images or imagining futuristic collections. It is about integrating technology into existing processes and solving specific obstacles.
Google says that many artificial intelligence projects in the industry are still in the experimental stage. To move forward, designers need to participate in creating the tools and retain the final say over creative decisions.
This idea may also appeal to entrepreneurs, small studios, and professionals who do not have large technical teams. According to Google, Flow makes it possible to create customized tools by describing the workflow you want to build in natural language, without needing to code.
Could a small brand use something similar to plan a photo shoot, visualize a storefront display, or prepare a presentation for investors? That is precisely the most practical promise of this approach: turning AI into an assistant that adapts to each process, instead of imposing the same solution on everyone.
Technology does not eliminate fashion’s complexity, but it can help designers like Jane Wade and Sergio Hudson spend less time handling repetitive tasks and more time making creative decisions. The future of the industry will not necessarily be fashion created by machines, but fashion where people have better tools to bring their ideas to life.
