Google announced new flexible usage limits for Gemini Notebook, an update designed to give you more control over how you use AI features in your notebooks. The change does not remove tools: it changes how usage is calculated and managed.
More control over each task
Until now, the usage limit could feel like a general daily quota for everything. With the new system, Gemini Notebook will have limits based on the computing power required for each action.
What does this mean in practice? A brief query should not consume the same resources as an extensive conversation with many sources, a complex analysis, or the creation of a complete presentation. The system will take several factors into account:
- The complexity of your instructions.
- The length of the conversation.
- The number of sources used.
- The features you activate in the notebook.
This means that two people could make the same number of queries but consume different amounts of resources. The idea is for the limit to better reflect the work you are actually requesting.
Limits refresh every five hours
Another important change is how often the limits renew. Instead of updating once a day, the limits will refresh every five hours.
This could be especially useful if you work with Gemini Notebook across multiple sessions. For example, you could research a topic in the morning, reach your limit with a demanding task, and continue after the next renewal without having to wait until the following day.
The goal is not for you to use Gemini Notebook less, but to help you distribute your tasks and computing budget more effectively.
What happens if you reach the limit?
Gemini Notebook will show you usage information and may recommend alternatives if the result you request exceeds the available limit. You will also be able to postpone some more demanding generations, such as video summaries or slide presentations.
In these cases, the task will be scheduled to generate automatically when resources become available. You will also be able to configure notifications to receive an alert when the result is ready.
This changes the experience from a simple “you can’t do that right now” to something more like a work queue. If you are preparing a class, organizing research, or turning documents into a presentation, you can let Notebook continue the process without keeping the app open and waiting.
Availability for personal accounts
Google reported that these changes will begin rolling out on September 2, 2026 for consumer accounts in the web and mobile versions of Gemini Notebook.
The update reflects an increasingly visible trend in AI tools: not all requests cost the same. Generating a short response, analyzing a large set of documents, and creating multimedia content require different amounts of computing power.
For you, the advantage is having more information and more options. Instead of treating the limit as a mysterious barrier, you will be able to better understand which tasks use more resources and decide which ones you need now and which ones can wait.
