Studying isn’t always difficult because of the amount of information, but because you don’t know what to review first. Google wants to solve that problem with Gemini’s study notebooks, a space designed to turn your own materials into a personalized learning plan.
The tool analyzes your strengths, identifies knowledge gaps, and adapts lessons based on your progress. The idea? To help you stop studying blindly and make it clear what your next step should be.
1. Discover what you need to learn
To get started, you can upload your syllabus, notes, readings, or other class materials. Gemini uses that information to create a diagnostic quiz and establish a baseline of your knowledge.
Based on your answers, it identifies the topics you already understand and those that need more attention. That way, instead of reviewing everything equally, you receive guidance that is better suited to your needs.
2. Study with short, personalized lessons
After the diagnostic assessment, the notebook generates short lessons focused on your knowledge gaps. Each one includes practice quizzes based on the materials you uploaded.
You can also stop at any time to ask questions within the same notebook. This saves you from jumping between different apps every time a question comes up.
Google says that later, during the summer, the lessons will include more visual resources, such as diagrams and interactive visualizations. For many students, seeing how ideas connect can be just as useful as reading an explanation.
3. Track your progress with concrete goals
Study notebooks include a personalized dashboard that shows your progress in real time. Gemini breaks your learning goal into more than 100 specific objectives, groups them by topic, and updates the status of each one as you complete new quizzes.
The objectives can appear in three categories:
- Strengths: concepts you already understand well.
- Focus areas: topics that need more practice.
- Not started: objectives you haven’t worked on yet.
The dashboard also recommends priority lessons so you know what to study next. Even so, you can filter the information and explore your strengths or focus areas separately.

4. Prepare for standardized exams
Preparing for important exams is often expensive and stressful. According to Google, study notebooks already support SAT preparation with questions backed by The Princeton Review.
The system uses the same process of diagnostic assessment, short personalized lessons, and progress checks. This way, you can identify more precisely which parts of the exam you need to practice.
The company also plans to add more standardized tests, including JEE, NEET, ENEM, ACT, and GRE during the summer. This could expand the tool’s usefulness for students in different countries and education systems.
5. Keep your materials organized
Study notebooks connect their sources with the Gemini app and NotebookLM. This lets you revisit previous conversations and use the class materials you have already uploaded.
Within NotebookLM, that content can be used to generate interactive flashcards, video summaries, and other review resources. In practice, your notes stop being isolated files and become a foundation for creating different ways to study.
A useful tool, but not a replacement for a teacher
Study notebooks can help organize learning and identify weak points, especially when you don’t know where to start. However, their quality will depend on the materials you upload and how accurately you answer the quizzes.
